When you’re planning out your new kitchen, it’s important to think about how you and others will move around in the space. This is what’s known as kitchen flow. Traffic flow through the kitchen has to be easily directed, with no corners the will be cumbersome for movement. Here are a few things our designers keep in mind when they are planning the layout of a kitchen.
The Golden Triangle
“The Golden Triangle” is the name that kitchen designers have given to the three main work spaces in the kitchen: the refrigerator, the range, and the sink/dishwasher. As you’re preparing a meal, you’re likely to move between these three main areas. You’ll get fresh food from the refrigerator, take it to the range to cook, and take dirty dishes to the sink or dishwasher to clean. If these three spots are as far away from each other as possible, or if there’s something like a kitchen island obstructing your path, then walking back and forth between these three points while preparing a meal can be frustrating and even exhausting. So, our designers take special care to make sure the the three point of The Golden Triangle are conveniently spaced.
Open Kitchen Plan
Many modern homeowners are opting for open kitchen plans. An open kitchen plan removes any unnecessary walls and corners in order to open up a space. Not only does this make a kitchen feel more light and airy, it also greatly improves space and traffic flow in and out of the kitchen. Widening walkways and bringing up ceilings are also great ways to contribute to an open kitchen plan. A kitchen that is full of children or guests is much easier to navigate when there are fewer walls and wider walkways.
Entry Points
Entry points are an important aspect of kitchen design. When considering traffic flow through the kitchen, it’s important to consider how people will enter and exit the kitchen. Make sure that none of the entry points will ever be blocked. For example, if the refrigerator is right next to a doorway, will the doorway be blocked when the refrigerator door swings open? In this case, considering the entry points can help to avoid an accident. When you have a kitchen flow that is easy to navigate, you’ll have a kitchen that is fun to work in and hang out in!
